Sanford

A growing downtown, and easy access to the Maine Lakes Region and Boston, surrounded by scenic trails and parks.

Welcome to Sanford

Located along the Mousam River, Sanford, Maine, is just inland from Wells and Kennebunk and is bordered by North Berwick.

Access north to Portland, ME (34 miles) and south to Boston, MA (88 miles) is easy by car or by Amtrak at the Wells Regional Transportation Center. With approximately 22,000 residents, Sanford is the 7th largest municipality in the state of Maine.

Sanford is the western part of land purchased from the Abenaki in 1661 by Major William Phillips, an early owner of mills in Saco. First called Phillipstown, it was willed in 1696 by the widowed Mrs. Phillips to her former husband's son, Peleg Sanford. Settlement didn't occur, however, until hostilities from the French and Indian War eased. Eventually, the region became less dangerous for new settlers, and Sanford incorporated as a town in 1768. The town became a city and incorporated as such in 2012.

Sanford is considered the gateway to Maine's beautiful Lakes Region. Residents enjoy camping, fishing and boating on Bauneg Beg Lake and Mousam Lake, as well as on the numerous other ponds and lakes that dot the landscape. Seasonal "glamping", or glamorous camping, is yours for the asking at Huttopia Southern Maine on Sand Pond Road

When the winter weather gets too cold for outside water sports, the local Sanford-Springvale YMCA boasts a warm year-round pool. For more recreational opportunities, there's golfing at semi-private Sanford Country Club, and disc golf at Gowen Park and Hammond Farm in N. Berwick. High fliers can sign up for lessons to pilot either planes or helicopters at the Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport. The airport is also home to Maine's largest solar array, which produces enough electricity to power 20,000 area homes.

Sanford, Maine, has an extensive trail system maintained by volunteers. These walking trails are for all abilities, and include boardwalks, bike paths, and history walks. You can access the downtown areas of Sanford and Springvale through these footpaths.

It includes the Sanford Regional Tech Center, where area students have access to state-of-the-art career training and college credit in a wide variety of fields such as digital design, culinary arts, and emergency medical services. The high school campus also is a regional destination for shows taking place at the brand new Sanford Performing Arts Center.
