Saco, Maine, just like its sister city Biddeford across the broad Saco River, is flourishing.
For thousands of years, native American tribes used the powerful waterfalls near what is now Main Street as a source of food and as a bountiful hunting ground.
Emigrating Europeans in the early- to mid-1600s found the waters of Saco Bay to be a safe haven for their ships, and a small European settlement eked out an rough existence until the first part of the 18th century, when lumber mills and permanent roads slowly ushered in a period of growth and prosperity that lasted well into the 20th century.
Saco's immense riverfront cotton mill buildings, mostly closed by the mid-20th century, have been reborn today as chic new apartment buildings, offices, boutique shops, galleries and restaurants. Kids and families love to spend summer days at Funtown-Splashtown and Aquaboggan, Saco's very own amusement parks. Warm summer nights find crowds at the Saco Drive-In, one of the few remaining drive-ins in the area, or at the Imax theater on Route 1. Museums and art galleries round out the ample leisure-time opportunities in the area.
