With a population of just over 4,500, Raymond, Maine, is a small town with plenty of forested land and lakefront.
The five-mile-long Raymond Neck peninsula juts out into Maine's deepest and second-largest lake, Sebago. Raymond residents spend warm summer days at Tassel Top beach, a 35-acre recreational area. Sebago is joined in Raymond by Panther Pond, Thomas Pond, and Crescent Lake.
Raymondtown Plantation was originally named for William Raymond, a man from Beverly, Massachusetts, who distinguished himself in the "Great Swamp Fight" during King Philip's War in 1675. Though Raymond began to be settled around 1770, most people arrived after the Revolutionary War. Raymondtown Plantation was incorporated as Raymond in 1803.
Raymond shares a school district with the adjacent larger town of Windham. An elementary school and a middle school are both located in the town of Raymond, and students move on to Windham High School in grade 9.
All the fresh water in and around Raymond makes for fun-filled summers of boating and swimming. Year-round hiking opportunities abound in the Raymond Community Forest, and spectacular natural beauty surrounds you everywhere in the spring and fall as the seasons change. The Raymond Community Forest is a network of trails on over 300+ acres between Crescent Lake and Pisgah Mountain, and is protected by the Loon Echo Land Trust. Rattlesnake Mountain also has wonderful views when you reach the top. Winter brings opportunities for nearby cross-country or downhill skiing, or for trips to Portland, Maine's largest city, 21 miles to the southeast.
