Berwick, Maine - Historical Overview

Originally part of the town of Kittery, Berwick was first settled by Europeans in 1631. Natives had called the area 'Newichawannock for millennia, and that name lives on in Newichawannock Woods, a 78-acre preserve that abuts the Salmon Falls River. The town of Berwick was incorporated in 1713 and named after Berwick-upon-Tweed in England. The first schoolhouse in Maine was built here in 1719. In 1814, the town of South Berwick separated from Berwick, followed by North Berwick in 1831. Collectively, the towns are known as 'The Berwicks'. Berwick remains connected to North Berwick by a shared school district.

At the count of the last census in 2020, approximately 8,000 people called beautiful Berwick, Maine, their home. Berwick residents share a border, the Salmon Falls River, with the sales-tax-free state of New Hampshire. Kayaking and boating on the river is a popular activity for many who live in the area. Berwick is currently enjoying the growth of businesses in its downtown area, and the residential real estate market remains brisk.

The town is located near several transportation hubs that make commuting North or South very easy, either by highway or Amtrak.
